Nitmiluk Gorge winds along 12km of sheer rock extending more than 70m high. Consisting of 13 separate gorges, Nitmiluk Gorge is a maze of waterways sculpted from the sandstone over countless millennia by the Katherine River.

Nitmiluk Tours is a successful 100% wholly owned and operated Indigenous Tourism Operation within Nitmiluk National Park and is the exclusive provider for touring the breathtaking Nitmiluk Gorge, located approximately 320km South of Darwin Northern Territory, Australia.

1992 - Present​

Initial Brief

Jawoyn Association represent the Traditional Owners of the Katherine region. MLCS have been strategically involved with the group since 1992 and assist on various projects. The initial brief revolved around reporting on Jawoyn's future involvement with its operations in the Nitmiluk Katherine Gorge National Park. Since this period of time the role has expanded greatly over a number of years as the business has expanded.

Highlights

  • 1993 - MLCS Corporate raised project finance and implemented a joint venture. The Jawoyn Association became a 25% stakeholder in the new Nitmiluk Tours business (cruise operation, campground and in 2006 canoes) via Nitmiluk Tours Pty Ltd joining Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) and Travel North in the joint venture.

  • 1997 -MLCS assisted in the development of the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre and Cultural Centre in conjunction with National Parks.

  • 2005 - MLCS Corporate arranged for Nitmiluk Tours to buy out Travel North at end of joint venture to be 100% owned and managed, with further funds invested in the campground pool and the addition of self-contained Chalets.

  • 2006 – Advice regarding the upgrade of boat to allow enhanced cruising options.

  • 2009 – Construction of 10 new cabins (Chalets) within the caravan park.

  • 2013 - MLCS assisted in the Business Planning and capital raising of over $7m of the Cicada Lodge five star resort at Nitmiluk National Park.

  • Assisted with the Project Management with completion of Cicada Lodge in February 2013, 50% owned by IBA.

  • 2015 – Advised on the buyout of IBA’s 50% interest in Cicada Lodge now 100% owned by Cicada Lodge.

  • MLCS Corporate retained on the Board of Nitmiluk Tours Pty Ltd providing ongoing advice and support.
